Bayard Cutting Arboretum CSA Farm
The Bayard Cutting Arboretum has started its second year of our Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) Farm. The farm is the only CSA in the NYS Parks and we are very proud of this new addition to the arboretum. The fifty farm members will enjoy vegetables weekly from mid May through late October.
As many of you are already aware, a CSA consists of a community of individuals who pledge to support a farm operation, with both the grower and consumers providing mutual support and sharing the risks and rewards of food production. Members of the farm pledge in advance to cover the anticipated costs of running the farm and to volunteer their time doing a wide range of jobs for the farm from helping in the field to working on the newsletter. In return, they receive a share in the farm’s bounty throughout the growing season, as well as the satisfaction of reconnecting to the land and participating directly in how their food is grown. All food on the arboretum CSA will be grown using organic and sustainable methods.We are currently accepting membership applications and will be finalizing our 2014 membership base shortly. About the Farmer
Jen Campbell comes to Bayard Cutting Arboretum with almost 10 years experience creating and managing a small CSA (community supported agriculture project) on the south shore of Long Island where her duties included greenhouse and garden management and volunteer coordination. She helped to develop and implement an ecology curriculum to teach to middle school students and she educated local garden clubs and community groups through site visits and lectures. She was awarded a certificate of master gardener in 1993 and was named master gardener of the year in 2007. She was owner of a small garden design and planting business and gained further experience working at a local nursery. She has been a member of a GCA affiliated garden club for more than 20 years. Prior to creating a CSA, she developed strong organizational and interpersonal skills working in the public affairs office of a university and a financial office.
Jen hopes to combine her passion and knowledge of organic gardening with her organizational skills to create a dynamic CSA that is productive, educational, beautifully maintained and welcoming and accessible to its members and the public.
