“A true cosmopolite of vast energy and stunning intelligence… Origo was the rare person of privilege who used her position for the real betterment of the world.”
—Nicholas Fox Weber, The New York Times
“Images and shadows,” contain beautiful depictions of Westbrook Mansion at Bayard Cutting Arboretum and of her family and are quoted throughout this exhibit.
To celebrate the reprinting of Iris Origo’s autobiography Images and Shadows, the William Bayard Cutting Arboretum will be hosting a book signing and presentation by Katia Lysy, great great granddaughter of William Bayard Cutting, who has written an afterword for this new edition, and her brother Antonio Lysy, a concert cellist of international renown and professor at UCLA, who will be performing.
Of Westbrook (at Bayard Cutting Arboretum) she writes:
“my grandparents, with much imagination and enterprise, had transformed a spit of sandy, mosquito-haunted land and marsh into a wild garden and park of great beauty and built, in 1886, the house which became their home… indoors the house had a remarkable degree of spaciousness and comfort: a paneled library, a dining room and breakfast room, a wide piazza that looked out over a velvety expanse of green, shaded by a few great trees, to the wide river flowing down to the Great South Bay.”
